DIY Gutter Cleaning Tips
When you simply prefer to clean your gutters yourself rather than hire a professional gutter cleaning company in High Wycombe, then there are a few things to keep in mind to make your job easier and safer.
Safety
When using a ladder to gain access to your gutters, be sure to use a second person as helper. Your ladder should be firmly placed on solid ground, not on grass or a slope. The second person should be firmly holding the ladder at all times so be sure the ladder is stable. Your helper can also lend a hand with passing items to you so that you are not moving up and down the ladder when not necessary.
Thick, waterproof gloves should be worn to prevent cuts and scrapes, and also to make cleaning up easier. Safety goggles will keep dirt, sludge and debris from getting into your eyes. Getting a stick or twig in your eyes when on a ladder can spell disaster. You can read more about gutter cleaning safety here.
Tools
There are several tools that will make the job of cleaning your gutters more efficient, saving you time and trouble. A recommended list of tools to use is:
- Sturdy ladder and helper
- Waterproof gloves
- Safety goggles
- Bucket
- Heavy duty bag
- S hook or rope to secure the bucket and other tools
- Trowel
- Garden hose
Method
Start clearing your gutters at the end nearest the downpipe. Remove the debris with your hands or with a trowel. Place the debris into a bucket secured to your ladder, being sure to never reach too far as to make it unsafe. When you must move the ladder, come down from the ladder, making sure it is firmly planted before ascending back to the gutters. If your bucket becomes full, pass it down to your helper and have them empty it into a heavy bag, limiting the number of times you must go up and down. This also means you do not have to remove debris from the ground after clearing it from the gutters, saving you time.
After you have cleared all the debris from the gutters, rinse the gutters with the garden hose. Because you started nearest the downpipe, this means you will not have to move the ladder again.
Once you have cleaned your gutters, inspect them for any damage, and you are done!
